When does it snow in Kufri?
Kufri usually gets snow between December and February, and January is often the snowiest month. Snowfall varies a lot from year to year — some winters bring heavy snow in December, others not until late January — so treat any trip as a winter trip first and a snow trip if you are lucky.
Tip: Ask your host about recent snowfall a few days before you travel.
What is Kufri like in winter?
- Days are cold and often bright; nights drop below freezing.
- After fresh snow, fields, forests and rooftops turn white and the views are at their best.
- Weekends and holidays — especially around Christmas and New Year — are very busy on the Shimla–Kufri road.
Are the roads open in winter?
Roads around Shimla, Kufri, Fagu and Theog stay in use through winter, but heavy snowfall can slow or temporarily close stretches until they are cleared. Ice can linger on shaded bends for days afterwards.
- Keep a buffer day in your plans.
- Travel in daylight; roads freeze after dark.
- Use a local driver if you are not used to snow and ice.
- Carry chains or check whether your taxi has them.
- Call your host before setting out for the latest local conditions.
What should I pack for Kufri in winter?
| Essentials | Why |
|---|---|
| Heavy jacket and thermals | Sub-zero nights and wind chill |
| Woollen cap, gloves, scarf | Most heat is lost from head and hands |
| Waterproof shoes with good grip | Snow, slush and ice |
| Extra socks | Wet feet get cold quickly |
| Sunglasses and sunscreen | Glare off snow is strong at altitude |
| Lip balm and moisturiser | Cold, dry air |
| Basic medicines | Pharmacies may be a drive away |
